Configure Protected Item on Desktop Client

  1. Login to Zmanda Pro Desktop Client and click on “Create New Protected Item “and select VMware vSphere from the protected items list and then click on “Next “.

  1. Under the “Connection” tab, select the vSphere API and click on "Configure" to input user credentials.

  1. Enter the vSphere credentials, ensuring that the account used has the necessary roles assigned. For more information, refer to the vSphere Connection details.

  1. Click on "Test Connection" to verify the client's connectivity to the host, then click “Next“

  1. Click the plus icon on the right to start choosing virtual machines.

To back up ALL virtual machines on the vCenter/ESXi, select the top-level VMware vSphere or you can opt to select specific virtual machines individually.

  1. Choose the backup type for the selected virtual machines and click on “Next”. For more information on the available modes, refer to the options.

  1. On the “Commands” tab, you can add commands to run before or after the backup job. By default, no extra commands will run. Click on “Next”.

  1. Under the “Schedules” tab, you can set the schedule for when the backup should run. After configuring the schedule, click on “Next”.

  1. Under the “Retention” page, you can configure retention periods through defined policies or by configuring retention range. Click on “Next”

Note: Any custom retention policies will override the default policy for the storage vault.

  1. Enter the name of the protected item and click on “Next”

  1. The final page displays the configurations made so far. To run the backup immediately, check the box labeled "Run this backup now" and click "Finish." If you only want to save the configured protected item, uncheck the box and click on "Finish."

Configure Protected Item on Server

  1. Navigate to the web UI with appropriate URL and enter the tenant-admin credentials to login to the server.

  1. Click the "Devices" tab to navigate to the Devices page, then select the user associated with the device.

  1. Click on "Protected Items" to navigate to the Protected Items page, then click "Add Protected Item" and select the device you want to configure a protected item for.

  1. Under the “General” tab, enter the name of the protected item and select VMware vSphere from the protected items list and then click on “Next“.

  1. Under the “Authentication“ tab, select the vSphere API and click on "Configure" to input user credentials.

  1. Enter the vSphere credentials, ensuring that the account used has the necessary roles assigned. For more information, refer to the vSphere Connection details.

  1. Click on "Test Connection" to verify the client's connectivity to the host, then click “Next”.

  1. Click the button in the top right to display the list of VMs available on the configured host and select the virtual machines you want to back up.

To back up ALL virtual machines on vCenter/ESXi, select the top-level button labeled “All virtual machines“

Additionally, click on the plus icon on the “Items” tab to access several manual options that can be configured for a more tailored selection.

  • Include All Virtual Machines: This option allows you to back up all virtual machines found on the host. Selecting the top-level item in the picker will select all and apply this filter. This feature is beneficial for dynamically including new virtual machines to the backup without needing to reconfigure the protected items.

  • Include Specified Virtual Machine: Only virtual machines with matching name will be included in the backup.

  • Exclude specified Virtual Machine: Virtual machines with matching name will be skipped.

  • When manually specifying a virtual machine, you can use the following formats:

    1. [datacenter-name] vm-name to back up a specific VM in a datacenter.

    2. vm-name to target all matching virtual machines across all datacenters.
