# Linux

Zmanda can back up data from over 22+ enterprise workload types. This video will demonstrate how to set up your Linux instance as a source to be backed up.

Zmanda can easily protect data residing on Linux systems. Whether they be desktops, or more likely, servers, simply [install and configure the Zmanda agent](https://docs.zmanda.com/installation-and-configuration/step-3-add-sources/linux/installation), then [add the system as a source](https://docs.zmanda.com/installation-and-configuration/step-3-add-sources/linux/configuration) in the Zmanda Management Console.

The Linux Agent is also required to protect Fileshares, as well as the Zmanda Backup Server itself.

Please see our[ compatibility matrix](https://www.zmanda.com/compatibility-matrix/) for a list of distributions supported by Zmanda. If you don't see your favorite on this list, please reach out to us at <sales@zmanda.com> and ask about your desired distro and version.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.zmanda.com/zmanda-classic/installation-and-configuration/step-3-add-sources/linux.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
