Immutable Backups

The immutable backup mechanism protects the integrity of your data by protecting it from being tampered with or deleted. Follow this guide to set up an immutable backup with Zmanda

This document describes the steps to configure immutable backup in Zmanda for AWS S3 and Wasabi. The immutable backup mechanism protects the integrity of your data by protecting it from being tampered with or deleted. It prevents an object from being deleted or overwritten for a fixed interval of time.

Enabling/Disabling immutable backup from the Storage page

An immutable backup toggle exists on Add Storage and Edit storage page. Once the toggle is enabled, you can configure the immutable mode and retention period settings.

You can enable or disable the toggle button to Enable/Disable immutable backup for that particular storage.

This setting will be applied to all the backup sets mapped to the storage.

Below is the screenshot for different immutable modes, i.e., Governance and Compliance.

Required Fields

  • Immutable mode: You can open the drop-down to select the Immutable mode.

  • Retention period(days): You can configure the retention period by entering it in the text field in days. The default value is 60 days.

On clicking the SAVE button, it will save the immutable backup configuration and will be applied to all the backup sets created for this storage.

Enabling/Disabling immutable backup from the backup set page.

By default, the immutable setting will be inherited from the storage i.e.

  1. If immutable is disabled at storage Level, the “Backup Where” page will have the immutable backup toggle as disabled.

  2. If immutable backup is enabled at the Storage level, the “Backup Where” page will have the immutable backup toggle as enabled with the configuration set at the storage level.

You can overwrite the default setting while adding the configuration. Modification of setting is not allowed once the setting is applied.

On clicking ADD CONFIGURATION button, it will save the immutable backup configuration and a bucket would be created in AWS S3/Wasabi with immutable backup enabled. As a result, all the backups run for this bucket would be protected from a Ransomware attack.
